Helping eradicate cancer

The Relay For Life comes to Brennan Park's all-weather fields for its third annual event June 22, and organizers are already on their way to breaking last year's $100,000 total funds raised.

"Our fundraising goal this year is $112,000, but whatever our total is, every bit helps. We've already raised $25,600 in online donations," said organizer Tamsyn Morote. "We have 38 teams registered and we are hoping to get 40 teams, 270 people registered. The participants in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵput an amazing effort into raising money though pledges and team fundraising events."

With team registration fast approaching the Friday (May 25) deadline, Morote is encouraging potential participants to register soon.

The event kicks off at 6:30 p.m. with the Survivors' and Caregivers' Victory Lap followed by the opening ceremonies. Then teams of 8 to 12 people take turns walking around a track for 12 hours until 7 a.m.

Numerous powerful, emotional moments occur during those 12 hours, said Morote.

"There are so many emotions running through the night," she said. "Cheering the survivors as they walk the Survivors Victory Lap is a special moment as it gives hope to others battling cancer and for the participants to see that what they are doing does make a difference," she said.

"The Luminary Ceremony, where bags are placed around the track in honour or in memory of a loved one is a very special moment for everyone. We walk a lap in silence, which is very powerful. I also love meeting all the participants and seeing the community come together for one night in the fight against cancer. Together we make a difference."

Morote is inviting cancer survivors to join participants to the VIP reception and Victory Lap. The Luminary Ceremony begins at 10:30 p.m. and visitors can take home a special item through a silent auction.

Organizers still need volunteers to help set up on Friday, June 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., for the event itself from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. and for take down from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 23.

Residents can register online at www.cancer.ca/relay or contact Morote for more information at 604 898-1012 or [email protected].

Money raised through events like Relay For Life helps the Canadian Cancer Society continue its mission to eradicate cancer and enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer by funding some of the best research and providing information and support services for people living with cancer, their families and friends.
