The Chief newspaper received two distinguished awards and high praise during the Canadian Community Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵpapers Association (CCNA) Better Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵpapers Competition awards gala in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Friday (May 11).

Peter Kvarnstrom, vice president of Glacier Ventures Community Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵpaper division, attended the gala, accepting top awards for General Excellence and Best Editorial Page in the circulation 4,000 to 6,499 category.

"The Chief came out on top for several reasons," stated judge Albert Krambergen, "including strong, tightly written stories with interesting leads. Their presentation was, hands-down, the top of the 42 entries in this class. The Chief sets a high standard for community newspapers - and for daily papers - across the country: All hail The Chief."

It's the second time in three years that the CCNA has bestowed the honour on The Chief, and the first time in a new, larger circulation category. The Chief was second in this category in 2006.

Publisher Tim Shoults credits a strong team and prominent community interest for the recognition.

"We're very pleased to be honoured by our peers," said Shoults. "Community newspapers are an important part of our cultural fabric, and to be recognized as one of Canada's best is a proud moment for all of us at The Chief.

"We have an excellent team and a great community to serve and I am thankful to everyone who works here as well as to all our readers and advertisers, who make us what we are."
