Cat Lake gets more support

Opposition to the Garibaldi at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵproposal is intensifying, as opponents focus on the impact to Cat and Brohm lakes.

"I'm really concerned that this could completely disrupt public use of Cat Lake for campers and hikers," said Denny Dias, who created the group "Save Cat Lake" on the popular interactive Facebook website. Within 24 hours, 140 members had signed onto the group and by press time, it had over 400 people linked to it.

The Garibaldi at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresort, ski hill and golf course proposes residences within 110 metres of the lakes.

Dias said he got wind of the plans when a resident handed him a pamphlet at Cat Lake indicating a golf course will eradicate camping.

"I camp up at Cat Lake all the time and it's a shame to think that I may not be able to do that anymore," said Dias.

The province's Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) is reviewing the proposal and is accepting public comment until Aug. 5.

Graeme McLaren, project director with the EAO, said it's not clear what would happen with camping access.

"We're working with MOTSA and the proponent to try and clarify that," said McLaren. "I cannot give a proper answer until the end of the public review period and we have all the comments in."

According to an EAO representative the response has been, "significant" results will be available by October.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts (MOTSA) has approved the project, subject to the EAO's report, according to Minister Stan Hagen.

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵcouncil also supported the project in principle, with a caveat.

"We're not going to support anything that has an adverse effect on the lakes," said Mayor Ian Sutherland.
