Mayor and council,

On behalf of the 1,000 individuals who formally expressed concern, and the many other cyclists, pedestrians and motorists who will benefit, The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTrail Society extends its sincere appreciation to District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵstaff and municipal council for allocating the resources necessary to improve active transportation within our community.

The bicycle network plan submitted by [director of community development] Mr. Gottardi and accepted by council for inclusion in the 2009 budget, will allow cycling as a viable commuter option on our main north-south route. This route connects seven of our public schools with the major population centres. When gaps in the existing network are upgraded more people will be able to include cycling as transport mode to school, work, shopping and recreation destinations.

Motorists and cyclists will appreciate fewer close encounters and stressful passing situations. Pedestrians will have fewer surprise interactions with cyclists, when cyclists are traveling with the flow of traffic, as is the convention.

This is simply a strong statement of commitment to a move in the right direction for our community.

We now hope the province steps in to make good on their public offering (Bike BC Infrastructure Partnership Program) and provide the matching funds that will permit Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵto reach this alternative transportation goals a lot sooner.
