A Touch of Brass comes to St. John's

A Touch of Brass is B.C.'s premier brass quintet and they will be in concert at St. John's Anglican Church tonight (Jan. 23) at 8 p.m.

A Touch of Brass is B.C.'s premier brass quintet and they will be in concert at St. John's Anglican Church tonight (Jan. 23) at 8 p.m. This talented ensemble has entertained audiences around the world for many years and the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is pleased to welcome this group to Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵthis evening. Billie's Bouquet and The Adventure Centre have tickets available at $20 for adults and $15 for seniors and for college and university students (with a current/valid card), the price is $5 each. Youth ages 18 years and under will be admitted free of charge.

There will be some exciting games of scrabble played at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library on Sunday (Jan. 25) when Scrabble for Literacy gets underway at 9:30 a.m. There will be team and singles competition for adults and children and three games are guaranteed. Prizes will be awarded for the top pledges and the top individual scores. Remember, this is an amateur competition played for fun! Friends of the Library, Highlands Starbucks and Boston Pizza are sponsoring this event.

The Sun Run in Training Clinic held its first session on Jan. 17 but there are spaces available for those interested with registration closing on Jan. 31. Figure out what level you would like to tackle and they are: learn to walk 10 km, learn to run 10 km, or perhaps you want to run faster? The clinic is held each Saturday at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre and you can register there or go online at www.squamishlive.ca (code 15871) or check the Program Guide at www.squamish.ca.

The first gathering of the Courage to Grieve Support Group sponsored by the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHospice Society was held on Jan. 19 but there is still time for those experiencing loss through death to enroll in the program. The group will meet each Monday from Jan. 26 to Monday, Feb. 23 at the Sea to Sky Community Services at 38142 Second Avenue from 7 to 9 p.m. Please contact Wendy at 604-892-1552 or email: [email protected] or www.squamishhospice.ca to register or for more information.

If lively fiddle music, songs and step-dance appeals to you, make sure you are at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Jan. 25) at 8 p.m. to enjoy The Jocelyn Band with Brian Robertson. Fourteen year old fiddle player Jocelyn Pettit has now added singing to her repertoire and this talented young lady does not disappoint.

For one more week, the Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre for a walk in the downtown area on Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. For more info, call Darleen at 604-892-2092 or myself at 604-815-0152.

On Thursday (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m., the Adult Evening Book Club at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library will discuss the book Effigy by Alissa York. Anyone who has read the book is invited to attend.

Alexandra Morton is to B.C. salmon what Jane Goodall is to chimpanzees. She has made it her life work to keep the wild salmon migration routes free of salmon farms. Morton will be at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday (Jan. 24) at 8 p.m. and you are invited to attend. Admission is by donation.

A date popular with many seniors is the monthly Soup and Sandwich Day and this month the date is Thursday (Jan. 29) at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre starting at 11:30 a.m. It is always a tasty lunch including soup, sandwich, coffee/tea and goodies and all for the great price of $5 each.

Two CD's entitled "Healing Voices" performed by the Chor Leoni Men's Choir is now on sale at The Adventure Centre and Billie's Bouquet for $16. Proceeds from the sales will go to the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHospice Society.

Te Over the Hill Hikers are planning a trip to Stanley Park and along the Sea Wall loop on Tuesday (Jan. 27). Members are asked to meet at The Adventure Centre at 9 a.m. for carpooling. For more information or to join the Hikers, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Parents, grandparents and child-care providers are invited to attend a course that is designed for individuals who care for infants and children in the workplace or at home. The course, Emergency Child Care and First Aid will be held at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Monday (Jan. 26) and Wednesday (Jan. 28) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Another course is planned for Saturday, March 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. To register or for more information, please call the BPRC at 604-898-3604.

It was my privilege and pleasure to have known Rev. Mike Stuchbery and his wife Tracy of St. John's Anglican Church during their seven years in Squamish. They were both so involved as well in many community groups and activities and they will definitely be missed. All good wishes and God's blessings go with you and your family as you move to Penticton later this month.
