WINNIPEG 鈥� Two connected crashes on a Manitoba highway have left three people dead and several injured.
RCMP say a sport utility vehicle and a minivan collided Monday on Highway 6, the main transportation link to northern Manitoba, near the community of Grand Rapids.
A 23-year-old woman in the SUV and a 42-year-old woman in the minivan died, and five others were injured.
The crash closed the highway for seven hours, and when the road reopened, another vehicle with a drained battery from the long wait would not start.
Mounties say a pickup truck stopped to help, and the vehicles were then hit by a van, killing a 33-year-old man and injuring another man who were standing outside the stalled vehicle.
RCMP say they are still investigating and no charges have been laid.
"Early investigation has determined that the SUV (in the initial crash) crossed the centre line, colliding with the minivan," the RCMP said in a press release Wednesday.
