Five young local swimmers wowed spectators and coaches in Kamloops Dec. 8 to 11, achieving gold medals, setting new club records and qualifying for higher levels of competition.

The four girls swam for North Vancouver's Chena swim club at Kamloops Ice Classic swim meet and walked away with gold and glory.

"The meet turned out to be an incredible weekend for Chena," said head coach Craig Potsep. "We won 52 medals with 34 of them being gold. It was an amazing experience for all those who participated."

Squamish's Olivia Montgomery achieved her Senior National time qualifier in the 200 metre free where she "absolutely crushed the competition," with a time of 2:04.84 for a new team record, according to Potsep. The next closest swimmer came in at 2:08.

"Olivia's best time was 2:08 before this so it was a great drop and I have never seen her look better," said Potsep. "This time now qualifies her for any Senior Canadian trials in the future."

Ten-year-old Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresident Jessica Johnstone had the strongest showing of all swimmers at the meet. Jessica won gold in all of her eight events and she earned the title of top swimmer of the meet for all age groups by getting the highest points of all swimmers.

Jessica also qualified for provincials in her 10 and under category.

Twelve-year-old Hana Vartanis of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵalso came through for her team, achieving 2nd overall in her age category. Hana earned a rack of medals with two gold, two silver and three bronze. To top it all off, this meet earned Hana a selection for the B.C. Winter Games taking place late February.

The fourth local swimming talent was 14-year old Claire Ourom. Claire's performance also earned her a selection for the B.C. Winter Games and also allowed her to qualify for Nationals in July.
