Runners hit winding trail

Alice Lake's annual trail running event returns Sunday (Sept. 9) and the odds of beating course records this year are high.

Alice Lake's annual trail running event returns Sunday (Sept. 9) and the odds of beating course records this year are high. The eight-kilometre and 15-kilometre trail runs attracted more than 100 competitors last year, and course records are begging to be bested.

Last year, Jacob Melville set the record for the eight-kilometre portion with a time of 32 minutes and 31 seconds -however it was an easy record to set since 2006 was the first year organizers offered the shorter section. And last year, John Davies took the 15-kilometre record, and title, in 1:05:40.

According to the event organizers, the eight-kilometre course is perfect for first timers. The course features great scenery, a few uphill sections, technical ramps and a downhill section to take racers back to Alice Lake. The 15-kilometre course is also a great trail run with fast, flowing downhill sections.

Loop the Lakes is the fourth event in the Sea to Sky Trail Running Series hosted by the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTitans Athletic Club. The series kicked off on June 24 with Comfortably Numb in Whistler, followed by Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵThunder on July 14 and STORMY on Aug. 11.

Roger Shirt is going into the Loop the Lakes event with 25 points after competing in all three of the first events in the series. Shirt is the only competitor who scored points in all three of the events making up the Sea to Sky Trail Running Series.

The next closest series competitor is Rob Lang with 20 points collected in Comfortably Numb and Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵThunder. On-line registration for Loop the Lakes ends Saturday (Sept. 8) at 8 p.m. However, racers should take note: no registration will take place on the morning of the race. Registered runners can pick up their race packages at North Shore Athletics Saturday (Sept. 8) between 1 and 4 p.m. or during the morning of the race.

The next event in the Sea to Sky Trail Running Series is the 25-kilometre Rubble Creek Classic set for Sept. 23. The final race in the series is the 10-kilometre Lumpy's Epic on Oct. 13 in Pemberton. Loop the Lakes race proceeds will go to the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵEmergency Program, SORCA, the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTitans and the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTrails Society.
