No stopping Sounders

The Howe Sound Secondary Sounders have plowed their way to victory through the last four regular season games.

The latest victory was last Saturday (Nov. 6) against Moscrop Secondary School from Burnaby. The Sounders won 14-9 despite wet conditions and a soggy field.

"This is the first winning season we've had," said Royce Reece, the receiver coach. "Hopefully, we keep it going."

Tailback Luke Johnston (#7) has had a strong season, averaging 200 yards a game with the ball. The game against Moscrop continued the trend.

"Luke Johnston got a game-winning touchdown," Reece said.

Johnston has over 1,000 yards with the ball in the season. But getting the offensive line in top shape is still a challenge, says Reece.

"We've got to get our O-line blocking."

The wet weather may have helped the team's strong play against Moscrop.

"It's hard, but usually Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵis better at it then the other team," said Reece.

Rob Ryan, who watches all the games and has coached many of the players on the team, said the defense played well against Moscrop.

"They just kept plugging away," he said.

Sounders players Gary and Jordan O'Neil are in first and second place in double AA football for defensive interceptions.

"There are a lot of really good athletes on that team," he said.

On Thursday (Nov. 11) the team played G.P. Vanier in New Westminster at Mercer Stadium in a wild-card round. The winner of that game (results were not available at press time) moves to the provincial AA playoffs.

The quarterfinals are Nov. 19 and 20 at BC Place.

"I think G.P. Vanier is beatable," Reece said prior to the game.
