Special to the Chief

If Maelle Ricker's recent results are any indication of how she will fare at the 2006 Olympics in Torino, then things are looking good for the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresident.

On Jan. 29, Ricker took gold in the Boardercross at the X Games in Aspen, Colorado - an event she had hoped to do well in leading up to the Olympics.

"The X-games will be a good indication of how people will do at the Olympics," she said, in a previous interview with The Chief. The tenth annual international competition involved more than 230 athletes from across the globe. Ricker beat out American Joanie Anderson and Claudia Haeusermann from Switzerland to take the top prize.

Ricker is now in Bardonecchia, Italy where the Olympic snowboarding events will be held.

The snowboarding events begin with the men's halfpipe competition on Feb. 12, where Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresident Justin Lamoureux will be competing. This is followed by the women's halfpipe event featuring Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresident Dominique Vallée.

The next local to compete will be Tom Velisek in the men's Snowboard Cross, which takes place Feb.13-16. Finally, Maelle Ricker and the rest of the Canadian ladies will take the stage for the women's Snowboard Cross, which will run Feb. 17.

All of these events will be televised on the CBC.
