A new banner will soon be lifted at the Brennan Park ice rink.

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵAtom Rep Eagles celebrated their well-earned winning banner Sunday to finish the hockey season in first place. The team won six of their last seven games to take home the regular season banner.

The Eagles edged out their arch-nemesis, the Vancouver Thunderbirds, on Saturday (Feb. 4) by winning, and by being gentlemen about it, according to team manager Kal Kaila.

"We only lost our sportsmanship points twice out of 20 games, so that's something for them to be proud of because you're not taking undisciplined penalties," said Kaila.

"You're not allowed to hit in this league but some kids get a little bit more aggressive than others and take their penalties that way.

But the team's done well by being disciplined and earned them the banner."

The Eagles cinched the first-place finish in Burnaby on Sunday (Feb. 5) with a hard-fought match against the North Shore Winter Club.

Back and forth goals throughout every period made for a nail biter, but the Eagles walked away with a 6-5 win and the banner. The Eagles would have earned the banner with a tie against North Shore, but the win made earning the banner much more satisfying, said Kaila.

"We said to them it's a lot more memorable if you go out and win the game instead of limping in with a tie," he said. The boys were ecstatic about winning the banner, which will be hung in the Brennan Park ice rink following an awards ceremony in March.

Now it's onto the playoffs.

The first place finish also means a bye for the Eagles during this first week of the playoffs. "We'll find our about our schedule this coming week," said Kayla.

The team has also been invited to play a tournament in Abbotsford March 17-20. "Hopefully they continue with their success," said Kayla.
