Walking for Wael

Community

Some walked, some biked and some ran. Some were on four legs and others were on two, but everyone at the Wael Audi Family (& Pets) Walk/Run, Sunday (June 12) was there to remember and honour the memory of one of a popular local RCMP member.

Presented by the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHealth Care Foundation Society (SHCFS), the Wael Audi Walk/Run consisted of a 5 or 10 km circuit from Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGeneral Hospital to Brennan Park Recreation Centre and back to Hilltop House.

"It went very well," said organizer George McKenzie. "We had about 30 people registered for the run and that included families, elderly people and some pets.

McKenzie said the event's mandate is to remember RCMP Const. Wael Audi, who died tragically in a traffic accident March 20, 2002, as well as to draw attention to the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHealth Care Foundation Society and its fundraising needs.

"This is the third time we have held the event," he said. "In previous years we have had a lot more people participate, particularly the year Wael passed away. We hope to get numbers up in future years, because it is a great way to call attention to the Foundation."

One of the benefits produced from the SHCFS has been investment into tele-radiography machinery for Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGeneral.

"This machinery allows the hospital to share things like X-rays with specialists who are far away," said McKenzie.

After the event, Rainbow the Clown and Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵNation drummers entertained participants and Hilltop House residents while Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵVolunteer Firefighters treated everyone to a barbecue.
