Two councillors oppose oceanfront bylaw

Briefs

Councillors Raj Kahlon and Corinne Lonsdale voted against the latest step in developing the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵOceanfront lands.

Despite the opposition from Kahlon and Lonsdale, a bylaw was passed this week to give the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵOceanfront Development Corporation increased autonomy. Mayor Ian Sutherland said the development corporation needed the ability to do its work and the bylaw is one of the tools needed.

Grant-in-aid for Humanity Village

Members of Council voted to allow the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHumanity Village Society free use of the auditorium at Brennan Park Recreation Centre so the group can host a fundraising dinner. The event on Sept. 24 is going to be a Sri Lankan themed dinner. The grant-in-aid is valued at $904.66 to cover the cost of the room, additional clean up and SOCAN music fees connected to the room rental.

Youth centre repairs approved

The roof of the Youth Centre by Howe Sound Secondary School needs some major work and the exterior of the building requires minor repairs, paint and upgrades.

Lawmakers voted to use $10,000 from the Council contingency fund to do the exterior repairs. Council also directed staff to prepare a report on the best option for dealing with the leaks in the roof so Council can consider funding roof repairs or replacement in the 2006 budget.
