Thank you Kay: seniors columnist puts down pen

Community

The Chief's most dedicated and possibly most prolific writer is calling it a career after more than 13 years of writing for Squamish's newspaper.

Kay Wirachowsky's last article for The Chief was published on June 10. That week she suffered a stroke. The stroke left her unable to carry on with her weekly newspaper column.

Kay is currently recovering at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGeneral Hospital. We are happy to report that while she isn't able to contribute to The Chief she is playing bingo twice a week.

Everyone at The Chief wishes to thank Kay for all of her hard work in reporting on seniors' activities in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand wish her all the best as she recovers.

We looked forward to seeing Kay every week when she brought her submission to the office, always well ahead of deadline. She and her husband Ed are social people and they didn't miss any of the newspaper staff functions. If Kay's illness prevents her from attending future functions, the Wirachowsky's will be missed at future staff functions.

Kay started writing for The Chief in 1992, soon after the paper began publishing. As other columnists came and went over the years, Kay proved to be the paper's only endurance writer. No contributor comes close to matching the number of years Kay toiled with pen and paper for The Chief.

You can read more about Kay in this week's Over the Hill column, written by our new contributor, Barbara Rudkin (see page 25).

The debut column by Barbara is her introduction and she offers an update on Kay. Barbara's Over the Hill column will mark the retiring of the column name, with a new name debuting next week.

Look for Barbara to appear on the community pages every week with information on seniors events and thoughts on issues relevant to local seniors.

We welcome Barbara to the pages of The Chief and once again express our appreciation for Kay's devotion to The Chief and local [email protected]
