The Climbers' Access Society of British Columbia (CASBC) is hosting its annual Adopt-a-Crag on Saturday (Sept. 11) in an effort to clean up the area and work on some of the trails.

"It's a volunteer effort to have fun and to help look after the cliffs we all share,' said Anders Ourom, CASBC president. "There's so many people that use the area, not just climbers, and there's no real active management in the area so we're doing our best to look after it."

The third annual event has drawn more than 50 people in each of the past two years, which is a North American-wide volunteer effort organized each September by the Access Fund.

"There's been a lot of interest in what's going on in the climbing community so we hope we'll get even more people out this year," said Ourom. "We're going to clean up everything we can, do some trail work and have some fun. We'll do maintenance on the Loop trail, finish the new Penny Lane and Alexis trails and if we have more people than expected, we may also do some cleanup at the Chief."

Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, shovels, brooms, picks, saws, pry bars, etc. Anyone is welcome to become involved in the clean-up effort to take part in keeping one of Squamish's unique areas in fine condition.

"It's certainly one of the most important climbing areas in Canada and we want to do our part to look after it," said Ourom.

Adopt-a-Crag gets under way at 9 a.m. at the gated parking area just off Harbour Heights near the Neat and Cool crag, rain or shine.
