Stay of proceedings for accused RCMP member

Briefs

Charges of criminal harassment laid against Const. Steve Small of the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRCMP were stayed last Friday (April 1). This means the court process is over unless new evidence comes forward.

After the charges were laid against Small in the summer he went on vacation and when his vacation time ran out he was placed on administrative leave.

His matter was the subject of court hearings in August and September and the matter was scheduled to be in front of a judge later this month and then again in May.

According to Cpl. Ritchie, Small is going to remain on administrative leave until the RCMP completes an internal review.

Details of the allegations against Small cannot be published because the information is subject to a ban on publication.

Small did not respond to a message from The Chief seeking comment.

Sudden death investigated

The RCMP attended the home at 1030 Tobermory Way Sunday (April 3) and initially treated the home as a crime scene but Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the RCMP said police ruled out foul play in the death of a 37-year-old man found alone in the home.

Police responded to the home at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday and police were still there early the next morning. The man's parents live in Whistler and are aware of their son's death but the man's name was not released.

Community policing station open Apr. 26

The storefront community policing station under construction on Cleveland Avenue is set to open April 26.

The RCMP is leasing the storefront space for Telus for well under the market value of the space and Telus spent $30,000 to prepare the building for its new use.

The office will be a place where anyone can speak to someone about any problems they are having to get information about RCMP programs.
