Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵnow has its own Inukshuk, the symbol of the 2010 Olympics - but the man who built the six-foot-tall, 2,000-pound structure on his front lawn did it more for his wife than to celebrate the Games coming to the Sea to Sky corridor.

"My wife likes these things," said Vic Hurford, who built the statue on the front lawn of his Ridgeway Crescent home in the Garibaldi Estates. "She made one a couple years ago and I bought her a jade one for Christmas. Then I said to her, 'How would you like me to build you one out on the front lawn?' and she said okay."

He recently created the monument with the help of his neighbour, Bill Fairhurst.

"I couldn't have done it without him," he said.

In just one week the pair worked together to shape the basalt rocks, dig a hole for the legs to go in, cement them in, and attach the individual pieces of the structure together with pins.

The head alone weighs 150 pounds and a small crane was used to lift the individual pieces into place. The rock border around the structure is representative of the area the Inukshuk originated from.

"There is no greenery up north at all," said Hurford, who has lived in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwith his wife since 1947. "They would just make it with whatever they had."

Although he built it for his wife, Hurford admits the Inukshuk may bring some attention to the yard as the 2010 Games approach.

"Everybody on the street has come by and had a look at it," he said. But I am not really an Olympic person. It is nice to see it, to see everyone have a chance at and that sort of thing. It will create jobs and boost the economy."

Myrtle Hurford said she has been interested in the Inukshuk long before it was announced as the official symbol of the Olympics, but it is particularly fond of the one located on her front lawn.

"I saw pictures, and I saw them on TV, she said. "But I love this one, I think he's great, really terrific."

"She has always been into rocky men," her husband added. "Now I have some competition."
