The Howe Sound School District will offer a summer school program for the first time this summer, trustees decided at last week's board meeting in Pemberton.
"This is something that students need," said Howe Sound vice-chair Amy Shoup, who sat as chair at last week's school board meeting May 11 in Pemberton while chair Doug Hackett was away.
"We want more choices for students . . . and to help them to get the marks they need," Shoup said.
Students now have the opportunity to take an introduction math 12 course over the summer, offering students a better chance at achieving the higher grades needed to meet increasingly challenging entrance grades for universities.
In addition to the introduction course along with a principles of math 11 course, other summer school classes offered include Grade 8 to 10 classes in English, math, science and social studies as well as a planning 10 class.
Shoup said the credit courses offered will be based on a minimum enrolment.

School Planning Councils to report
School Planning Councils from Whistler, Pemberton and 樱桃视频will present their annual reports to the Howe Sound School District Board within two weeks of June.
"The councils look at what specific areas a school is focusing on," said Shoup. "Most of the them involve literacy, social responsibility and First Nations goals."
The planning councils formerly submitted reports to the school board. However, the groups will make formal presentations on their reports this year.
"I think it is a really important process that people are going through and they spend a lot of time working on these reports," Shoup said. "This way we can give feedback and ask clarification questions. We are looking forward to this opportunity to have a face-to-face dialogue."
The School Planning Councils, which meet four to five times throughout the school year, are designed to improve student achievement by better informing the school board about school priorities and sharing their successes with other schools.
