Road crew damages Telus fibre optic cable

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

A road crew accidentally dug up a Telus fibre optic cable last July 14 and left 4,800 Brackendale and Garibaldi Highlands customers with limited or no service for five hours.

Now Telus is saying that customers will receive compensation if they call 310-2255 and request it.

"They will be compensated for the time they were without service," said Shawn Hall for Telus media relations.

At about 9 a.m. July 14, an unidentified construction crew working the 3100 block of Queens Way in Brackendale damaged a Telus fibre optic cable, knocking out service to about 525 Telus customers in nearby communities and affecting long distance service for 4,300 Brackendale customers.

The service was returned to 25 customers at a time while Telus crews spliced each line individually, bundled them in groups of 25 and sealed them.

"The repair took as long as it did because Telus crews had to dig up and replace about 150 meters of underground cable, splicing it on both ends," said Hall.

It's unknown whether Telus will seek compensation from the construction crew, but "Telus routinely seeks damages from third-parties who damage Telus infrastructure to recover costs associated with repairs," according to Hall.
