Reuse-it area at free dump days this year

Community

Spring is here and it's time for volunteers to scour the community for garbage accumulated over the winter.

The District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵin partnership with Carney's Waste Systems and the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵVolunteer Centre are coordinating for the local arm of Pitch-In Canada Week, a national campaign to clean up the environment from April 17 to 24.

"By picking up garbage and litter we will become more aware of what's being thrown away, what could have been recycled and we'll also have a better understanding of the consequences of littering," said Pat Taylor of Carney's Waste Systems.

This year the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRotary Club is sponsoring a new reuse-it area at the landfill in conjunction with free landfill days next Saturday and Sunday (April 23 and 24).

The reuse-it area will allow residents to trade, drop off or pick up appliances, clothing, books, dishes, bicycles or anything else that may still be useful.

Pitch-In week culminates in the free landfill days when residents can bring loads of tires, appliances, compost, steel, paint and general refuse to the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵValley Road landfill.

Contractors offering their services to volunteer groups can register with Coralee at Carney's Waste Systems at 604-892-5675.

The Pitch-In movement encourages volunteers, youth groups, businesses and municipal governments to take part in roadside and property clean-ups, recycling drives, habitat improvements and other clean-up events.

Individuals can collect bags, glove, safety information and wildflower seeds by contacting Mary Lou or Pamela at 604 815-6868.
