Rec facilities analysis suggested

Briefs

Briefs from the District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵCouncil regular meeting on June 21:

Businessmen Ron Anderson and Douglas Day delivered their report on how to move forward following the failure of last year's $20 million recreation referendum.

They recommended a cost benefit analysis for some of the items on the proposed new facilities list. Anderson said the move could show a significant return to the public for a relatively small expenditure.

In putting together their report, Anderson and Day met with a number of community groups.

According to Anderson, the people the pair spoke to were very knowledgeable about the issue and most wanted new facilities.

Gardner clear to sell, rent cars at Diamond Road

Council voted to approve a temporary use permit so Greg Gardner can make greater use of his B lot.

The fenced lot on Diamond Road is currently a used vehicle storage area. Gardner told Council the vehicles on the lot are frequently vandalized. He wants to put a portable building on the site and install lights.

The owners of the Garibaldi Village project opposed Gardner's application because the mall owners want to buy a portion of Gardner's property to create a road right-of-way from the mall to Diamond Road.

Council instructed Gardner and the mall owners to negotiate a right-of-way deal.

Tree removal rules in place

Council dedicated a great deal of time on the issue of tree cutting. The Select Committee on the Environment asked council to take steps to ensure site clearing and tree cutting doesn't take place before a development permit is issued on sites facing development.

According to the committee, the district has the ability to do this through the Official Community Plan.

Council then gave first three readings to a site alteration bylaw. The proposed bylaw sets out restrictions on what trees can and cannot be cut on land within the municipal boundaries.

Peters named second Acting Mayor

With a busy summer season ahead, the members of Council voted to appoint Ray Peters as the back up to the Mayor's back up.

When Sutherland is not around, Coun. Sonja Lebans takes over the mayor's duties.

Through July and August there may be times when both Sutherland and Lebans will be away. The mayor asked staff to bring forward a motion to appoint Coun. Peters as Acting Mayor during those times.

The vote was approved unanimously.
