The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRiver Watershed Society (SRWS) is looking for a few good people interested in salmon recovery.

The society is hosting a half-day workshop on Saturday (Feb. 25) to discuss priorities identified in a 2005 Salmon Recovery Plan, and to inform those interested in learning how to apply for this year's project funding.

The SRWS has been working since 2001 with the Pacific Salmon Foundation to develop the recovery plan.

"We had a workshop to develop the Salmon Recovery Plan," explained Edith Tobe of SRWS. "We invited people to come and participate and give their input. It was very successful.

"That helped solidify the recovery plan, which was completed in May 2005," she said. "Now, CN has contributed $225,000 to go towards this particular recovery planning."

This year's money is part of a $1.25 million grant CN awarded to the Pacific Salmon Foundation Feb. 10.

"That total amount will be split over five years," said Tobe. "So this year, we have this money to go towards the recovery options identified in the recovery plan."

Tobe said the half-day workshop, which takes place at Municipal Hall Council Chambers between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., is aimed at informing people about how they can submit proposals for funding.

"We would like to get some public input and open up a call for proposals and get people to write applications," she said. "We would like them to attend the workshop to find out the priorities which were identified in the recovery plan and what funding opportunities will be explored and encouraged."

She said unfortunately the Cheakamus River will not see any of this funding.

"Probably none of this money will go towards the Cheakamus River, as there is other funding going on for that with CN and BC Hydro," she said. "Essentially, people will apply for this funding, and the application will go through a technical review committee, probably made up of province, federal, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵNation and technical representation, along with the Pacific Salmon Foundation. They will review the projects and budgets and determine who gets the funding."

The workshop is free of charge, and lunch will be provided, but space is limited and registration is required.

The workshop is scheduled to take place Feb. 25 in Municipal Hall Council Chambers between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.For more information contact Tobe at [email protected] or call 604-898-9171.
