Phone call leads to arrest of suspect

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

A Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵman who was arrested for breaking into a home in Valleycliffe is probably regretting his decision to answer the phone.

According to Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRCMP, the suspect broke into the home on Maple Drive and the homeowner entered the house some time after the suspect gained entry. Sensing something was wrong, the owner decided to use a phone at the Valleycliffe Mall to call her home number.

To her surprise, a strange man answered. Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the RCMP said the homeowner ended the call and dialed 911.

"Police attended and located and arrested a 23-year-old male from Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵhiding in the residence," Ritchie reported. "The residence had been broken into by forcing a door open."

Ritchie said the woman recently purchased the home and was preparing the home for occupancy.

The man arrested at the house on Maple had mail belonging to 45 different people, said Ritchie.

The suspect made a court appearance on Friday (June 3) and was before a judge again on Wednesday (June 8) facing a charge of possession of stolen property and breaking and entering.

Ritchie said the suspect was in possession of some candy that suggested to police that he may have also been involved in a break-and-enter at the concession stand at Centennial Fields.

On June 1 more than $500 worth of beverages, hamburgers, buns and hot dogs were stolen from the concession stand. On top of that, the building sustained more than $700 in damage.

"The suspects made some burgers while they were in the concession," said Ritchie.

The concession stand incident is under investigation.

Charged in connection with the break-in on Maple Drive is Daniel Vecchies. He is scheduled to appear again in court on June 23.
