Over the Hill returns after hiatus

Community

After a hiatus of several weeks, due to the illness and subsequent hospitalization of the usual writer of this column, Kay Wirachowsky, Over the Hill with its news concerning events and activities of interest to Squamish's more senior citizens, is back once more to be written for a time at least by Barbara Rudkin.

The column has regular contributors with the times and places of their events; however, any items that may be relevant - items retirees and/or seniors may wish to attend or become involved with - are invited.

One person cannot successfully seek out all that could be included in a column such as Over the Hill, so please do contact me at 604-898-5029 or better yet, email to [email protected] with items of a one time nature or ones that would occur regularly.

While the column this week was intended to replicate as closely as possible the coverage given by Kay, it must instead become more of an SOS to those out there who are the regular contact persons for the items that usually get mentioned. You know who you are - I, for the most part, don't, and those I do know of have been difficult to connect with due to holidays and such. Please do make yourselves known to me at the numbers already given.

Starting next week, if the response is good, the column should be more like its old self (no pun intended). In the meantime, continue to check Maureen Gilmour's About Town column as she has graciously been taking up the slack during Kay's absence.

One item that did come in is for the Early Dementia Support Group; this group has been renamed to: The Healthy Brain Program for Early Dementia and it meets every first and third Tuesday of each month at 10 a.m. in the Tantalus Seniors' Centre. Patricia Stoop is the contact person at 604-892-2293. In addition, this group along with the Caregivers' Support Group will be meeting with Joan McIntyre, our local MLA on Thursday (Aug. 18) at 3 p.m. at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre.

Kay Wirachowsky is presently in the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGeneral Hospital working valiantly to overcome the effects of a stroke. On June 15, she and Ed celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary, "as much as one could with the restraints of hospitalization" said Kay and she is looking forward to her 80th birthday on Sept. 28. On Mondays and Thursdays she is taken over to Hilltop House for Bingo but other than that life in hospital is pretty "boring" so visits from friends and family really brighten up her day.

I look forward to hearing from you all out there with news, not necessarily exclusive to, but of interest to Squamish's retired or senior citizens.
