Outdoor school, First Nations Partners in Paradise

Community

Howe Sound residents are invited to rekindle old memories and have new experiences during the North Vancouver Outdoor School's (NVOS) annual open house event, Partners in Paradise, on Sunday (June 5) from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Residents can participate in a number of First Nations activities, bannock making and salmon fry releases. Or they can find out what's happening at the salmon hatchery, the farm and the Coast Salish Bighouse. There will also be an opportunity to try paper-making, canoeing, archery and face painting.

The fun family event is a chance to explore a school that runs unique environmental and cultural programs in a spectacular parklike setting.

NVOS has been involved in experiential residential field-based studies since 1969. As a field school, the mission of NVOS is to provide hands-on educational programming in its outdoor classroom to students of all ages. The topics covered explore both natural and cultural history. At NVOS students can wander under 1,000-year-old cedars, watch a goat kid being born or gaze at hundreds of wintering bald eagles and thousands of spawning salmon. NVOS also provides outdoor experiences to local and international community groups that rent the facilities for programs and events.

NVOS is located 20 minutes north of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵon Hwy. 99. Turn left at the Paradise Valley/Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵValley Road turnoff (opposite the Alice Lake turnoff) and follow the NVOS signs. The event will go ahead rain or shine and visitors are asked not to bring pets.
