No money here for tsunami planning

Mayor Ian Sutherland is trying to find out why Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwasn't included on the list of more than 70 coastal towns, villages and regional districts in B.C. who are receiving a combined a total of $1 million for emergency planning in case a tsunami ever hits.

Mayor Ian Sutherland said he was disappointed that Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwasn't on the list for funding, yet West Vancouver, Lions Bay and the communities along the Sunshine Coast were all included in the program.

"I am confident that once we make our case we will get the $10,000," Sutherland said.

In making the announcement on Jan. 13, Premier Gordon Campbell said the money is to be used to ensure the communities getting the money are properly prepared if coastal B.C. is hit by a tsunami.

"The devastating tragedy in South Asia is a vivid reminder for all of us of how vulnerable coastal communities are to the power of tsunamis," Campbell said.

"While British Columbians continue to support relief efforts abroad, we also need to take steps to ensure that we can respond to a tsunami on our coast. B.C. has excellent emergency planners who take the threat of tsunamis very seriously, but we also live in a seismically active region and we know there is more we can do to help them and our communities prepare."

The money is to be used to identify risks, develop enhanced response plans, upgrade communications and warning systems, and support public education programs.

Higher-risk communities on the west coast of Vancouver Island and along the central and north coast received $20,000.

The more protected communities in the Georgia Basin and south coast, except Squamish, received $10,000.

The province has also discussed funding with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada to provide for coastal First Nations communities.

"We've contacted the province to get clarification of why we were left off the program," Sutherland said.
