West Vancouver-Garibaldi MLA Joan McIntyre celebrated her first year in office last week with a half-million-dollar present for local child care and another $10,000 for summer camps for local students.

McIntyre,on behalf of the Ministry of Children and Family Development, presented a $480,055.70 grant to Sea to Sky Community Services Society last Friday (May 19). The grant was for child care capital funding which goes towards the cost of retrofitting a building and site preparation for a mixed-use daycare and office space.

On Wednesday (May 24), McIntyre announced the B.C. government, through 2010 LegaciesNow, is providing the Howe Sound School District with $10,000 to help 50 children attend two local Explorations summer camps.

With the province and the Sea to Sky corridor's economy firing on all cylinders, real progress has been made throughout British Columbia since last year's election, McIntyre said as she passed the one-year mark since her election.

"It's an exciting time in British Columbia right now, leading up to 2010," said McIntyre. "Our economy is booming like never before. We have strong leadership in the province, and our sound economic footing is allowing the government to re-invest in key social programs."

Locally, the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵLil'wat Cultural Centre has seen its funding doubled to $6 million and several ArtsNow grants have been awarded to local community groups. Investments have been made to the region's school districts towards the purchase of physical activity equipment and to implement health eating and living initiatives, she said.
