Locals aim to stop flow of drive-bys

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

Most Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵresidents can't say enough about the area's beauty, potential and bright future. But now locals' enthusiasm will be broadcast to Whistler visitors.

When two local producers working for Whistler-based Resort TV heard that the broadcaster had a few minutes of airtime to fill, they immediately pitched an idea for a spot on Squamish, and the broadcaster bit.

"It just seemed a natural extension of what we already do," said Resort TV manager Jackie Bissillion. "Every person who visits Whistler drives through Squamish. Sadly, I think most of them drive by it." Once Ethan Miller and Angela Moore got the go ahead, they "really grabbed the reins," said Bissillion, and within a week the duo had a script prepared. Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵattractions will now be broadcast to an estimated 2 million Whistler visitors annually.

"We'll be using the Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada as a focus," said Bissillion, with information on ocean sports from diving to kayaking as well as golfing, biking, hiking and climbing.

"From the point of view of our audience, we're trying to give them a complete picture so they get the impression that if they go to Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵfor the day or a couple of days, they're going to have enough to do and eat and see so it makes it interesting."

Ten sponsors from a variety of tourism sectors have paid $300 to $600 each to include their business in the infotainment spot. And the main sponsor, Solterra Development, has ensured that the broadcast include a concept of the future of Squamish.

Entitled "Discover Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵpresented by Solterra Developments," the five-minute spot will includes information on downtown development planned by Solterra as well as oceanfront and university development.
