Local team fundraises for cancer

Community

A Summer Solstice Gala Fundraiser will be held at Pepe & Gringos Restaurant, June 25 to help a group of local people raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life.Named Team Pura Vida, or Pure Life, the group consists of family and friends who have been touched by cancer in some way or another and decided to do something to help.

"A couple of people on our team had or now have cancer, as well," said team leader Brenda Chelswick. "My mother-in-law had breast cancer, but has been cancer-free for two years and another team member, realtor Val Orchison, is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer."

Both Chelswick's mother-in-law and Orchison will participate in the first lap of the Relay For Life on June 24 called the Survivor's Lap, which is run by cancer survivors and their caregivers.

The team has already raised more than $500 from events such as garage sales.

"Our goal is to raise more than $2,000 and we are almost halfway there," said Chelswick."Tickets are $75 per person, but we will also be giving a $20 tax receipt for each ticket at the event."

The Summer Solstice Gala Fundraiser will include a five-course meal, five-piece salsa band from Vancouver, great prizes, a silent auction and much more. The event on June 24 at Brennan Park Recreation Centre will see more than 20 local teams in a relay from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with all proceeds from fundraising and pledges going to cancer research.

Tickets for the Summer Solstice gala can be purchased at Pepe & Gringos Restaurant, or by calling 604-892-7716.
