The library is issuing new library cards that will allow borrowers to register their card and use it to check out library materials in Burnaby, Coquitlam, North Vancouver City and District, Port Moody, Richmond, West Vancouver and Whistler.

Libraries belonging to Interlink, the federation of Lower Mainland public libraries, implemented a program, which will allow users to decrease the number of cards they carry. All library users need to do is present ID at Interlink libraries and they can borrow books on their home library card.

"We expect the service to be popular, especially with borrowers who live in one community and work in another, or regularly use more than one Interlink library," said Maureen Painter, the chief librarian at Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library.

The linked library card program could become province-wide in the future. In October 2004, the provincial government published Libraries without Walls: a vision for Public Libraries in BC. It outlined a strategic plan for the future of public library services, including shared electronic resources and universal high-speed Internet access. Part of the vision is the implementation of a similar card link system for the whole province.
