Liberation jazz tonight at Adventure Centre

The concert in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Holland will be held tonight (June 10) at the new Adventure Centre on Highway 99. Direct from Holland will be Luluk Purwanto and the Helsdingen Trio and Stage Bus. The evening gets under way at 6:30 p.m. with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 Colour Party parade led by the Black Tusk Caledonia Pipe and Drum Society Band. Mayor Ian Sutherland will officially open the event at 6:50 p.m. The Jazz concert will start at 7 p.m. till 9:30 p.m.

For those planning to attend tonight, remember this is an outdoor concert and it is a good idea to wear warm clothes and take along your favourite lawn chair. The Adventure Centre will be open for you to check out the progress and the Pause Café will have refreshments available. Everyone is welcome to attend and to donate whatever they are able. For the first 250 people willing to put down $10 for the concert, they will receive an entertainment package of coupons valued at $45 for discounts at various outlets. Donations will help the sponsors, Howe Sound Performing Arts Association to cover expenses.



Returning to Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵfor another wonderful performance is the Vancouver Chamber Choir, and the Gallery Singers and they will perform at St. John's Anglican Church on Sunday (June 12) at 3 p.m. Opening the afternoon of entertainment will be St. John's Children's Choir directed by former Gallery singer Tracy Stuchbery. Tickets are available at $15 from Billie's Bouquet, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library and at the church.



Camp Summit, located at the north end of the Easter Seal Camp on Government Road is hosting an open house this Sunday (June 12) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is an opportunity for parents and children between the ages of eight to 17 years to meet the staff and learn more about the summer camp opportunities. Take all the family and enjoy a fun day with camp games, archery practice, Frisbee, golf and more! Light refreshments will be served. Registrations are now being taken for the summer and if you are not able to attend but wish more information, please call 604-898-3700.



Children of all ages are invited to attend the Kindergarten Health and Childcare Fair at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre tomorrow (June 11) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Of course it's time for the kindergarten booster immunization but there is more, like the fun interactive play activities, the climbing wall, vision information, speech and language, hearing, dental hygienist info, recreation/community info public health nursing and much more information for families. It would be appreciated if you could take along a non-perishable food item for the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵFood Bank.

This Sunday (June 12) the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵEnvironmental Conservation Society will hold its monthly bird count. All participants are asked to meet at 7 a.m. at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company. On Sunday (June 12) the Brackendale Art Gallery will welcome the Swingin' Gypsy Jazz group. Michael Dunn, an instrument guitar builder, has performed at the BAG many times with the Kitsilano Kat Kickers. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and tickets at $15 are available at the BAG and Mostly Books.



James Delgado, curator of the Vancouver maritime Museum and author of Adventures of a Sea Hunter and In Search of Famous Shipwrecks will give a talk at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library on Wednesday (June 15) at 7 p.m. This free event is sponsored by a Writers in Library grant from the Province of B.C.



The Teen Book Club at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵlibrary next meets on Tuesday, July 5 from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. when members will discuss the book Sun Shines by Shelley Hrdlitschka. Copies of the book are available at the library now.

Families are welcome to attend the drop-in storytime program on Wednesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Join the staff for a half-hour of stories, songs and rhymes. Participants in the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵHealth Care Foundation Society's Wael Audi Family and Pets walk/run 5-10 km on Sunday (June 12) are asked to be at Hilltop House at 10 a.m.

A fundraising golf tournament for DARE (Drug Awareness Resistance Education) will be held at the Garibaldi Springs Golf Course on Tuesday (June 14) at 1 p.m. The $100 fee includes golf, riding cart, car for hole in one, watering hole, putting and chipping contest, prizes for all participants and a barbecue dinner at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵValley Golf and Country Club. Canada World Youth is still looking for host homes for 20 young people from Canada and Uruguay who will be on an exchange program. They will be here from June 25 to Sept. 12 and two participants will stay with each family. Host families are provided with a weekly allowance of $140. Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGardeners are presenting the 7th annual Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGarden Tour on Sunday, June 26 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵLibrary, Billie's Bouquet, Anna's Attic and at the Garden Centre on Mamquam Road for $10 each. This is a self-guided tour and your ticket includes a map, and complimentary tea or coffee at Gelato Carina.



The next meeting for the Creative Connections for Seniors will be held on Monday, June 13 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre. Guest speaker will be Leslie Keenan from the North Shore to discuss Assisted Living.



The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTown Centre Association is holding auditions for local entertainers to perform for a series of open-air public shows this summer. The first Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵSummer Fest will be held on Saturday, July 2 in the park near the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPavilion. Musicians, singers, dancers, actors, jugglers, buskers, and others are invited to audition. Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwelcomes Thomas the Tank Engine to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park this weekend, June 10 - 12 and June 17 - 19. There are still tickets available at Ticketmaster at 604-280-4444 or online at ticketmaster.ca.
