More than 70 kids in the Sea to Sky corridor will benefit from the 2010 Olympics this summer thanks to a new summer camp program focusing on the arts and recreation.

School District 48, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵParks and Recreation and Pemberton Parks and Recreation are putting on four summer Explorations camps for kids ages six to 12 with a $20,000 grant from the provincial Ministry of Education and 2010 Legacies Now.

Legacies Now is a non-profit society created by the provincial government to work with community organizations, the private sector and other levels of government to provide sustainable legacy projects in sports and recreation, arts, literacy and volunteerism in the leadup to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and beyond.

There will be two week-long camps, one in July and one in August, in both Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand Pemberton. Participants will experience Stomp drumming, theatre sports, visual arts, climbing, swimming, challenge games and finish off with a 'Festival Friday' where they show off all they have worked on in the week.

"The best part about getting the grant is it's making the cost really affordable," said Anne Thomson, School District 48's Fine Arts co-ordinator and one of the camp's organizers.

The first camp in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵtakes place Monday, July 11 to Friday, July 15, with the second camp Aug. 15 to 19. Registration has filled up quickly and no new additions to the wait list are currently being accepted.
