Easter fires damage two homes

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

Brackendale is the neighbourhood of choice for Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵFire Rescue (SFR) with two fires in two weeks.

The first was March 28, Easter Monday, at a home in the co-op housing development in Brackendale at 11:30 a.m. and the second was Saturday (April 2) at 3 a.m. in a home on Reid Road.

According to Bob Fulton of SFR, the first fire was contained to a single upstairs bedroom. The room suffered extensive fire, smoke and heat damage. The upstairs hallway of the home also suffered damage. The estimate of the value of the loss is between $30,000 and $40,000.

Fire Chief Ray Saurette said the fire is being associated a candle but the cause is still under investigation.

The fire in the house was dealt with over the course of a few hours by 15 firefighters using a pumper truck, a ladder truck and a squad vehicle.

Fulton reported two boys were home at the time. They heard the smoke alarm and called 911.

The damage caused by the fire is expected to take five weeks to fix and for the time being the family can't stay in the house.

Two adults were asleep at the time fire in the house on Reid Road just five days later. The couple awoke and escaped out a bedroom window. Two boys living in the house were not home at the time. One was at the home of a friend and the other was with his grandparents.

There was a smoke alarm in the house.

The fire was contained to the kitchen and entryway but the rest of the house suffered extensive smoke and heat damage.

"It was a major interior loss," said Saurette. "Structurally the house is sound but the interior needs to be completely redone with new carpets and walls."

The damage estimate after the fire is pegged at $100,000 and Saurette estimates it will be months to repair the home and make it habitable again.

A total of 26 firefighters fought the blaze.

The cause of the fire is under investigation and there are no indications at this point of how the fire started.
