Briefs from the District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵcouncil meeting Tuesday, Feb.

Briefs from the District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵcouncil meeting Tuesday, Feb. 1:

A plan to save the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵbranch of the Royal Canadian Legion from its current financial challenges is moving ahead after District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵCouncil approved an application to stratify the Legion building at Garibaldi Village.

The stratification is part of a Legion plan to rezone the bottom floor and sell the space to Al Ross of Tantalus Bike Shop.

After approving the strata application the local lawmakers gave a rezoning bylaw first and second reading then set a public hearing date for Feb. 15. Anyone with an opinion on the rezoning can voice support or concerns during the public hearing in the council chambers.

$15,000 grant-in-aid for SORCA

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵOff Road Cycling Association (SORCA) asked for, and received, a grant-in-aid to carry out a trail mapping study. SORCA president Cliff Miller said the study will be a key component of a five-year mountain bike plan the organization is putting together for the community.

Coun. Corinne Lonsdale voted against the grant after she argued the request should be dealt with in budget discussions, pointing out she consistently votes against such grant-in-aid requests because of her belief in deciding grant-in-aid requests in budget discussions.

Coun. Dave Fenn said the mapping information is important to have and the work should have been done years ago.

Cheakamus topic of upcoming meeting

Mayor Ian Sutherland is scheduled to meet with officials from B.C. Hydro to discuss the current debate over how much water should be taken from the Cheakamus River for power production.

The province's deputy comptroller of water rights, Pieter Bekker, is currently holding hearings in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵto determine what impact a reduction in flows will have on the rafting industry. The hearings came about after commercial rafters voiced concerns for the future of their industry.
