Community Foundation gives $4,485 to three local groups

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

Three local groups are moving ahead with projects thanks to grants from the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵCommunity Foundation (SCF).Sea to Sky Community Services Society received a grant of $1,235.00 for the Faces of High/Scope Drum Making Project; The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵArts Council and the HotSpot received $2,500.00 toward a joint capacity development project and Sea to Sky Restorative Justice received $750.00 toward a community awareness program.

The grants were a product of a capacity development workshop held on June 2.

SCF grants committee chair Grace Halvorson said the workshop participants identified community assets, strengths priorities and opportunities for partnerships between non-profit organizations.

"These grants are some of the projects that developed as a result of the workshop," she said. "We were very pleased with the applications submitted. SCF hopes to again host a capacity development workshop in the coming months and we encourage other non-profit organizations to attend."

The Vancouver Foundation's Leadership, Engagement and Development Grants (LEAD) Program provided the funding for the three groups and the foundation in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵfacilitated the process of determining how best to invest the money program made available for use in Squamish.

The funding from the Vancouver Foundation program is made available to community foundations throughout B.C. based on population.

The program launched in 2000. It provides funding to non-profit groups whose innovative projects pool the talents and skills of residents to address local needs and that is supposed to lead to partnership building, civic involvement and community self-sufficiency.

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵFoundation holds over $120,000 in permanently endowed funds donated by local residents, businesses and government. Income from the fund is distributed to registered charities for community projects. In addition to endowment funds held by SCF, the Foundation has created an endowment fund valued at $60,000, which is held and managed by the Vancouver Foundation. The Foundation granted $30,000.00 to local charitable projects in 2004.
