CN and the District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵhave reached an agreement for compensation over damage caused by the 2005 CN derailment that saw 40,000 litres of caustic soda spill into the Cheakamus River.

CN has agreed to provide Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwith $100,000 over the next two years to assist the district in promoting the town's status as Outdoor Recreation Capital of Canada.

"CN has paid our hard costs when it comes to the consultants that we had to use and staff time," said Mayor Ian Sutherland, adding that negotiations were left up to staff. "At the end of the day it's probably a pretty reasonable solution."

A CN and district joint news release states the agreement concludes discussions.

"The district, following discussions with CN and its own legal counsel, has concluded it will not pursue legal action," states the release.

Called a "CN donation" in the news release, the $100,000 will be used to help the district implement its ongoing Tourism Marketing Plan.

"These funds will enable us to develop the resources to carry out marketing activities that increase the district's profile among potential visitors, and position us as the premier destination for outdoor recreation," said Sutherland.

The funds will be paid in two $50,000 installments.

The district and CN are also active participants in the Cheakamus Stakeholder Committee, made up of local groups and individuals with an interest in the Cheakamus.

The work is channeled towards implementing programs to rebuild affected fish populations.

Re-stocking and habitat improvement programs have been and are being put in place, and independent technical studies are showing that populations are recovering, according to the news release.
