Childcare cuts scaled back by province

Childcare advocates are warning parents and residents that the decision to reverse a portion of drastic budgets cuts does not mean that the widely-used Child Care Referral Resource (CCRR) centre will remain open.

Childcare advocates are warning parents and residents that the decision to reverse a portion of drastic budgets cuts does not mean that the widely-used Child Care Referral Resource (CCRR) centre will remain open.

"I just received an e-mail from our funder saying some smaller CCRRs could still be closed," said Suzie Soman, Sea to Sky Community Services' director of Child Development. "I am glad they have decided to continue funding for CCRRs I just hope it will include us as well. We should know early next week."

Soman last week attended a CCRR conference and said that of the five sectors of Vancouver Coastal Health, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand Sechelt have the smallest programs, and they could still be in jeopardy.

On Tuesday (March 6), the council for the District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵexpressed concern during a council meeting over the provincial government cuts to operating grants and other government funding to local organizations delivering childcare with no alternative support system in place.

Council passed a motion to send a letter to various ministers and MLA Joan McIntyre expressing their dissatisfaction with the province's handling of funding cuts.

The scaled back CCRR cuts also don't address other needs lost through the elimination of $455 million in federal transfer payments over the next three years.
