Benefit concert for Wanduruppa

Community

A Vancouver band has offered to play a benefit concert to help the Humanity Village's efforts to purchase bikes for Wanduruppa. Yuca heard about the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵproject to help rebuild a Sri Lankan village destroyed by the Dec. 2004 tsunami and approached Humanity Village chairperson Patricia Heintzman to offer their help.

"I was pleasantly surprised," said Heintzman. "They've done fundraising in their area in Langley and they thought the bike fundraiser was cool."

The citizens of Wanduruppa lost their bikes along with everything else on the day of the tsunami. For many in the community of approximately 600, bikes are a primary means of transportation. Some of the bikes have been replaced but Heintzman says that 100 bikes are still needed. These bikes are purchased in Sri Lanka for about $60 each.

Yuca is described as a rocking band with melody and a message. The band takes the stage at Howe Sound Inn and Brewing on Friday June 10, 8:30 p.m. The event will also include a silent auction and door prizes.

A suggested donation of $10 will be collected at the door. Those wishing to donate $60 for the purchase of a bike will receive a tax receipt.
