Shawn Bystrom, 41, and his girlfriend, 28-year-old Jennifer Marlatt, pleaded guilty last month in Provincial Court in Kamloops to charges relating to a four-week crime spree throughout the province, including a pair of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵbank robberies in December.

Drug dealers sentenced

Two men arrested last April following a police raid at a home on Sixth Avenue in downtown Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwere sentenced this week after being found guilty of possessing drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

Douglas P. Hassall of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵwas given a conditional six-month sentence and Roger J. Bergen was fined $250.

Police entered the home last year with a search warrant and two ounces of cocaine, half a pound of marijuana bud and 22 tablets believed by the RCMP to be ecstasy were seized. A quantity of money was taken from the home along with other drug-related paraphernalia.

Six cars crash at construction site

A fatigued driver may have triggered a six-car crash near Strachan Point on Hwy. 99 last Friday (May 27).

A vehicle driven by a 34-year-old woman from Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵcrossed the centre line as traffic was slowly making its way through the Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project area. The vehicle sideswiped one vehicle and then collided head-on with another vehicle, said Cpl. Ritchie.

Once all the traffic came to a halt a total of six vehicles were involved.

Ritchie said damage was minimal because of the slow speeds but the driver of the vehicle that strayed over the centre line was taken to Lions Gate Hospital with minor injuries. The woman was later released.

Ritchie said the accident is still under investigation and driver fatigue is something being looked into.

The drivers of the other vehicles involved were from Squamish, Whistler and Vancouver.

Fake American currency circulating

The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRCMP is warning money handlers to watch out for fake American $50 and $100 bills.

Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRCMP said a tall and slim man with longer grey hair is buying small low-cost items with the bills and getting change back in Canadian currency.

Ritchie reported that the man was seen driving a red four-door sedan and he has been accompanied by two children on occasion and on other occasions he was seen with two adult females in their twenties.

One of the females is described as having long black hair and a dark complexion. The other female is about 1.68 metres (5 foot 6 inches) tall and 73 kilograms (160 lbs.) with long brown hair and a noticeable gap in her front teeth.

The fake money was passed in Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand Britannia Beach at six different businesses over the course of two days.

Cougar killed

The RCMP was asked to attend the salt sheds area of Hwy. 99 between Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand Whistler at 11:45 p.m. on Monday (May 30) after a vehicle hit a large cougar.

Cpl. Ritchie said the cougar was injured and the cat managed to escape into the forest.

The driver of the vehicle left the scene, too afraid to stop. The vehicle was damaged but not enough to prevent the driver from making it home to Whistler. Ritchie said police found parts from the vehicle on the ground at the scene of the accident.

A member of the RCMP found the badly injured cougar and destroyed it.
