Artists rock at Britannia Beach

Community

The community of Britannia has an uncommon appreciation for copper and this weekend, the community is going to pay tribute to the base metal responsible for the creation of the town.

The third annual Copper and Fire will take place at the seaside town on Sunday (Aug. 14) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The abundance of copper at Britannia sustained the mining town for decades and evidence of the long quest for copper at Britannia is obvious.

Glassblower Duane Parrett of Whistler will use fire for his work. Other local artists participating at the BC Museum of Mining one-day event are potter Al Price, painter Toby Jaxon and a jewelry maker from the Amber, Silver and More shop.Local artist Jessica Lauder and her husband Ron will demonstrate how they make copper birdcages and wind chimes.

The local artists will join other creative people from all over B.C. to offer interactive demonstrations of their work.

Harvey Chometsky and Angela Hook both create sculptures formed using copper.

Chometsky is from Powell River and has created art for the past 35 years. Hook makes her home in Summerland and works as a graphic designer.

According to Farrah Rooney, the curator of the museum, there will also be live music, face painting, refreshments and arts and crafts. A special museum admission price is in effect for Sunday. The half price admission includes a full museum experience as well as the Copper and Fire event.

There is also live music. Paul Borchert will perform and act as the host for the day.

The other musical performers are: Caroline Grass, Mario and Anne Iacovone, Juan Carreras, Paul Coulter-Brown and Jeffrey James Cyr.A special children's play area will be set up featuring face painting and other activities.

World champion gold panner Yukon Dan will be back again this year after missing the event last year. Dan makes the challenging task of gold panning an entertaining event.
