Art festival moves downtown

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ

Wild at Art Festival coordinators have decided to move the event to downtown Squamish, and local merchants are thrilled.

Initial plans had the Adventure Centre and Rose Park as the festival's main locations May 6 and 7, but delays in the centre's construction and strong interest from merchants wanting to capitalize on the event influenced the festival committee's decision to relocate.

"It would have been a problem for workers and cause more construction delay," said Coun. Sonja Lebans.

The District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵstill plans to kick off the festival with an Adventure Centre ribbon-cutting and dedication ceremony to include B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell and federal Infrastructure Minister Stephen Owen. But stages will now be set up at the Chieftain Plaza on Cleveland Ave. where numerous local and out of town musicians will perform.

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTown Centre Association members Eric Armour, Carolyn Grass and Greg Fischer approached the district with a proposition to involve the entire community. The association is organizing a downtown open-air trade fair where local merchants could set up tables along Cleveland Avenue on in the Women's Centre parking lot.

"We didn't want to compete with the festival," said Armour, "but work with it to bring more focus on the merchants and celebrate the whole community."

The association is also working on other attractions such as buskers, Taekwondo demonstrations, pony rides, performances by the Sikh community, First Nations and belly dancers and a local Shakespearian troupe. Downtown activities will now occur during the entire day and into the evening on Saturday May 7.

The association is putting a call out to musicians and performers interested in participating.
