Briefs

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵ briefs from the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵRCMP and Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵFire Rescue:

Police on patrol noticed a van that wasn't navigating the roads well and when the vehicle was pulled over it was discovered the driver was wanted in the U.S.A.

Cpl. Dave Ritchie said the driver was originally pulled over Saturday (Aug. 6) at 2:30 a.m. because members of the RCMP believed he might be drunk.

The license plates on the 1997 Chevy van were from Kentucky. Ritchie said the driver was a 24-year-old man who left the military base at Fort Campbell, Kentucky without permission to do so.

The American was held over the weekend and Ritchie said the man is now facing extradition to the U.S.A.

There was a two-vehicle head-on collision 28-kilometres north of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵat the salt sheds on Friday (Aug. 5) at 2:15 p.m. and one man was trapped in his vehicle as a result of the crash.

According to Cpl. Ritchie, the small car was a northbound 1994 Dodge Colt and the southbound vehicle was a 2001 Ford pick-up.

Ritchie said the Colt crossed over the centre line into the path of the truck.

The two people in the pick-up truck, a couple from Oregon, were okay.Rescue crews from Whistler and Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵarrived at the scene at the same time, said fire fighter Bob Fulton. The two teams worked together to extricate the man in the car.

Fulton said the trapped man was saved by his airbag.

A medivac helicopter took the injured man to hospital.

Highway 99 was closed for 90-minutes while crews sorted out the crash.

RCMP personnel changes

The RCMP's Sea to Sky Traffic Services has a new leader. Cpl. Scott Bowden was recently promoted from within the department to take over the position left vacant with the departure of Cpl. Joe Schofield this spring.

Cpl. Ritchie said the vacant position created by Bowden's promotion from the rank of Constable will be filled soon.
