Adventure Centre federal money in place despite missed deadline

Crews are pressing ahead but work on the Sea to Sky Adventure Centre was not complete as of March 31, the initial completion deadline for the project to qualify for funding from the federal government.

Crews are pressing ahead but work on the Sea to Sky Adventure Centre was not complete as of March 31, the initial completion deadline for the project to qualify for funding from the federal government.

However, there isn't any concern about the $900,000 in federal funding being pulled because the building wasn't finished by the SICEAI deadline.

Acting mayor Sonja Lebans said the project, funded in part by the Softwood Industry Community Economic Adjustment Initiative (SICEAI) in B.C., was delayed along with a number of other projects in other places and the delays were not the fault of the local project leaders.

"We got our money and it is secure," Lebans said. "We know that we're in good shape so we are spending that money first."

The opening of the adventure centre between Hwy. 99 and Loggers Lane is going to coincide with the Wild at Art Festival planned for the first week in May.

"That is going to be the official opening of the building," said Lebans. "Everyone is happy with the building and the design and there is a great deal of excitement about it."

MP Stephen Owen is expected to attend a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 6 and Lebans said representatives from the provincial government will also be on hand. She hinted there was a chance Premier Gordon Campbell might attend.

While the federal funding for the centre is in hand the province has not yet contributed to the project. Mayor Ian Sutherland has consistently indicated he is confident the province will help fund the construction of the building.

Lebans expects the art gallery portion of the new glass and wood beam building will be set up as part of the Wild at Art Festival.

"The major art will be in the adventure centre," she said.

Everything is on schedule, she added.

As of this week, the building is yet to be enclosed.

Once the centre is in operation it is expected to become self-sufficient through the commercial activities set to take place in the building. Revenue is to be generated through a food and beverage operation, a gift shop and a booking centre.
