Adopt-a-crag at Smoke Bluffs

Community

The Climbers' Access Society of B.C. is holding an adopt-a-crag event at the Smoke Bluffs Saturday (Sept. 10).

The event assembles volunteers to do trail work, building and toilet maintenance, cleanup, and other necessary projects.

Adopt-a-Crag was an initiative of the Access Fund U.S., which now has about 100 events each Sept. The Access Society B.C. will hold 10 adopt-a-crag volunteer crag stewardship events throughout B.C. in 2005.

Some work has already been done by the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTrails Society at the Bluffs this year, including placing tons of gravel and finishing the Alexis stairs. The District of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵhas done additional work at the parking lot and supported the work of the Smoke Bluffs Planning Team.

Access Society organizers plan to place six to eight directional signs, and to rebuild parts of a loop trail and spread gravel on key areas to widen and clear brush from pathways.

There will also be plenty of miscellaneous projects such as garbage cleaning and outhouse painting.

Volunteers are asked to bring suitable footwear, gloves, rainwear, a lunch, beverages and sunscreen, as well as useful equipment such as clippers, shovels, axes, picks, pry bars, hoes, rakes and first aid supplies. Volunteers will meet at the Smoke Bluffs parking lot at 8:30 a.m. for refreshments, a brief orientation, and draw [email protected]
