ABOUT TOWN: Waves of compassion Saturday

Much hard work and planning has gone into the Waves of Compassion concert fundraiser and silent auction being held in the Brennan Park Leisure Centre tomorrow (Jan. 15) from 2 to 8 p.m.

Much hard work and planning has gone into the Waves of Compassion concert fundraiser and silent auction being held in the Brennan Park Leisure Centre tomorrow (Jan. 15) from 2 to 8 p.m. The benefit concert will go towards either immediate relief for the Tsunami survivors or towards the Adopt a Village project spearheaded by Councillor Jeff Dawson. Besides raising money, the concert hosted by Norm Foote will feature youth performers, children's choirs, soloists and professional artists. There will be some great items available at the silent auction too! A full page ad in this issue of The Chief (see page 17) will have a list of all the performers.

If you are not able to attend the concert tomorrow but would like to donate to the adopt-a-village project, cheques can be made out to The Sea to Sky Community Services Society c/o Box 949, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵB.C., V0N 3G0. Please write "Tsunami" on the memo line of your cheque.



This is the last weekend to take in the fun-filled antics of our local actors as they present Dracula: The Panto at the Eagle Eye Theatre tonight (Jan. 14) and Saturday (Jan. 15) at 8 p.m. At the 2 p.m. matinee tomorrow, there is a two-for-one deal, but also, all proceeds from that performance will go towards the Tsunami Relief Funds, as will any other funds you wish to donate.



In the midst of winter, the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGardeners have a positive outlook and are holding their first event of this new year. On Monday (Jan. 17) Sarah Orlowski will be the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGardeners' guest speaker at 7:30 p.m. in the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library. Sarah is a master herbalist from Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand she will give a talk on herbs for medicinal and culinary use with a gardening perspective. There is a $2 admission for non-members and $1 for members, which gives them a chance to win the door prize.



The next Teen Book Club meeting at the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵPublic Library will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 1 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The title to be discussed is A Perfect Snow by Nora Martin. This is a story about racial prejudice, anti-semitism, and intolerance. It is a novel about the need to belong, the need to feel powerful, and the need to control. Any teen 13 years and up are always welcome. As pizza and pop are provided it is always good to know how many will be attending. January is a popular month for birthdays at Hilltop House and when the birthday gathering is held on Wednesday (Jan. 19) at 2 p.m., ten residents will be honoured. They include: Mary Bennett, Peg Sutter, Rosamund Dashwood, Gerdie Griffin, Delfina Alvernini, Elizabeth Simpson, Hope Water, Freda Baity, Hannah Kirkwood and Anne Kristianson.



A support group for women dealing with difficult relationships and/or family conflicts is beginning on Thursday (Jan. 20) from 10 a.m. to 12 noon and each Thursday. For more information, please contact the Howe Sound Women's Centre at 604-892-5748.



The Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵYouth Theatre is holding auditions next week for its annual short play festival set for March 16 to 18. Producer Adriane Polo said actors of all ages are invited to audition as this is a real family event. Auditions will be held at the Sea to Sky Hotel on Thursday (Jan. 20) and Friday (Jan. 21) at 7 p.m. Rehearsals will be held each Sunday. Our Over the Hill columnist at The Chief, Kay Wirachowsky, has been in the Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵGeneral Hospital this past week and we all wish Kay well very soon and hope to see her column in the near future.



For the past six years, the New Year's baby has arrived promptly on New Year's Day! Congratulations to Marissa McLennan and her family on the birth of her son Daniel. Last year's first baby, Garet Sangha Badyal celebrated his first birthday on Jan. 1.



John Bottomley on guitar, Moritz Behm on fiddle and Dean Richards on drums plus other acts makes for a great evening of entertainment at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Jan. 16) at 8 p.m.
