Wild at Art lists numerous free events

Entertainment for all includes workshops, music, theatre and so much more

Wild at Art organizers are once again living up to the festival's moniker this year with an array of entertainment to appeal to all tastes and fancies. And with so many free events to choose from, every single resident can find something enjoy.

During the annual arts extravaganza, from March 6 to 14, festival-goers can buy tickets of up to $15 to take in high value events such as the festival gala, culinary arts displays, adrenaline-fuelled adventure films and hilarious theatre sports.

However those on a budget won't be left out in the cold - all of Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵcan take in diverse forms of free entertainment including visual arts, photography, musical performances, dance, theatre and numerous workshops.

Focussing on visual arts, organizers announced the theme Local Colour would dominate their free 2009 art exhibition at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park from March 7 to 14.

"I suggested that we do an art show around the theme Local Colour this year because it is inclusive to everyone, all ages and all areas in the arts. It's who we are told through the eyes of our artists," said gallery curator Judy McQuinn.

Locals can also take in free theatre, whether they expect it or not. Wild at Art has enlisted the help of Between Shifts Theatre crew and actors to entertain unsuspecting people throughout Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵduring the week leading up to the 2009 festival.

The actors will appear when you are least expecting. They will present a short sketch or scene from a popular play and then this mobile show will turn to the next venue.

"The idea behind this venture is two fold," said Kathy Daniels, Between Shifts president and actor. "On one hand, Between Shifts Theatre and Wild at Art mutually want to build a strong partnership in their efforts to create and market theatrical arts within Squamish. On the other hand, both organizations want to explore new ways to promote our local actors to an even wider audience."

Dance enthusiasts can also get into the festival spirit with a free family fun day at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. On March 7 from noon to 5 p.m., local instructor Francesca Tetrault and her students perform a series of dance combinations in the beautiful expression of belly dancing, an excellent activity for core strengthening and body awareness.

On Saturday March 14, everyone is invited to celebrate Squamish's heritage and history at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park. There will be a one-hour outdoor professional logger sports demonstration presented by Squamish's talented Bryan Couture of West Coast Lumberjack Shows. The company holds professional logging demonstrations that have wowed audiences all over Canada and the U.S., and has even travelled as far as Indonesia, Japan, England and Norway.

And last but certainly not least is the series of free workshops focused on business development for the arts community.

Visual artists can learn more about promoting their portfolios online and participate in setting up an artist-run co-op art gallery. Musicians can participate in a free two-hour workshop about the music industry, and ways to make money from their creative endeavours. Photographers can join in a planning session to create a photographic coffee table book for Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵand the Howe Sound area. And finally successful television and film actors will be here to offer free advice on how to get an agent, how to promote themselves and how best to proceed in the competitive industry.

Workshops take place March 7 and 8. Details are posted on festival website, www.wildatart.ca.
