Still dancing at any age

Like all of the great pleasures of life, dancing can be enjoyed at any age. Hence the idea behind Still Dancing, a local dance company that offers something for everyone, young and old.

Like all of the great pleasures of life, dancing can be enjoyed at any age.

Hence the idea behind Still Dancing, a local dance company that offers something for everyone, young and old.

These talents will be on display at the aptly titled City Scenes performance, taking place on Saturday (June 2) at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Brennan Park Recreation Center.

Presenting scenes of ballet and jazz, tap and hip-hop, students as young as three years old and others well into adulthood will showcase their talent through a metropolitan-inspired production.

"We have been working towards this for months, our students are so excited to dance on the stage with the costumes and lights," said Still Dancing instructor, Debbie Vidas.

"This year's production marks the nine-year anniversary of the dance studio, after having existed for 24 years as the Garibaldi School of Dance.

The students and teaching faculty have been hard at work choreographing, planning costumes and rehearsing for several months in preparation for the performances."

City Scenes will feature a dance-inspired interpretation of urban attractions, depicting construction workers, a park picnic scene, a trip to the zoo and even a spot on storefront mannequins that come to life.

Vidas works with fellow instructors Sandi Wadden, Jennifer Carney, and Jane Runnals, all of who share a passion for dance.

"[The best part is] working with the children - giving them something they may not anywhere else get, the joy of movement and the joy of dance," said Vidas.

"There are even 15 boys in this year's show, which is a record!"

The ideas behind City Scenes came to life when the instructors asked some of the younger dancers what they saw when they went to the city.

"We like to keep our shows upbeat. We've got the construction workers, the cats on the prowl, the garden scene, the window washers we even have some moms dancing this year," said Vida.

"The kids talked about trips to the aquarium, taxis, the night lights. It's all in the show."

Tickets for City Scenes are $12 for adults and $8 for children and seniors, available at Club Flex, Burneing Images Photography and at the door.
