Local retailer seeks Squamish's next top model

Over a decade ago, John Amenta launched Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵTalent Search -and his performing career with popular popera trio Destino. Half a dozen years later, Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵIdol brought local country crooner Nadine McNeil to fame, performing in from of tens of thousands at the Merrit Mountain Music Festival.

Now a local retailer hopes to launch the town's next discovery with the Squamish's Next Top Model contest Style Zone owner Trish James is organizing the contest based on the top rated America's Next Top Model and Canada's Next Top Model television shows. James said she hopes to help the town's young women discover their potential and learn new skills.

"It's a great opportunity for young girls to learn business etiquette, public speaking, dance, poise and runway training," she said.

Christina Marousis - a former model who competed in New York and worked in Europe -will be acting as James' "right hand woman."

"It was my obvious choice," said James of Marousis. "Not only does she practice make-up artistry, but she will also be conducting the runway photo shoot."

The application deadline for Squamish's Next Top Model is Aug. 26 and submissions can be dropped off at Style Zone in the Chieftain Mall. Judges from clothing distributors will choose from the applicants by Aug. 28 and following weeks of lessons in a variety of topics, including, business and dance, along with photoshoots. A contest involving the newly polished women will be held Oct. 26 at the Eagle Eye Theatre.
