Get ready for a little Francofun

École les Aiglons celebrates Semaine International de la Francophonie

Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵis joining a worldwide celebration Thursday (March 12) as L'École les Aiglons presents Une Soirée FrancoFUN -an evening of song, dance and food coinciding with La Semaine International de la Francophonie.

The fundraising event is open to the entire community, said Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) organizer Roseline Grimm, and proceeds go to expanding sports and cultural experiences for the 51 student at Squamish's fully francophone primary school.

"We have a strong francophone community here in the Sea to Sky Corridor," said Grimm. "And we have many people who, though not French speaking, thoroughly enjoy our language, food and culture."

The evening includes three original acts that are sure to get the dance floor hopping, as well as a silent auction featuring $4,000 worth of items donated locally and from afar, including a "priceless" entry: a 100-year anniversary Montréal Canadiens jersey.

"We are still gathering more items but we are already overwhelmed by the generosity of the people supporting us," said Grimm.

The show's opener, Josée Allard is from Powell River and brings her backed by her band Leoffenders. A French Canadian, from Powell River B.C., Allard sings and writes in both official languages of Canada. Her unique style is described as folk-pop/alternative fused with dance and ethnic beats. Top that off with a sultry voice, and Allard has talent worth noting.

Saint-Pierre will also hit the stage with his original jazz ensemble. The Québec singer, composer songwriter has been making music since the nineties. In 2005, he came to Vancouver, where his career took a new direction. In 2006 he won numerous awards at the Pacifique en chanson competition, including the Fan's Choice award. Since then, Saint-Pierre has taken a clear turn in the direction of jazz thanks to his association with pianist Geoff Peters and trumpeter Bryan Davies.

Finally, Hugo Paquin & Les Mecs du Québec brings the evening home with Squamish's own talented musicians taking the stage to get the toes tapping.

Tickets are on sale for $25 at L'Ecole Les Aiglons in the Garibaldi Highlands, The Howe Sound Inn, Gelato on Cleveland Avenue and at Whistler's Core.
