Tuning in to the musical moniker 'from laptops to hightops,' Vancouver's Fur Bearing Animals play their first Ó£ÌÒÊÓƵshow at the Howe Sound Brew Pub on Friday (Feb. 22).Guitarist/vocalist Andrew Clements and turntable/violinist DJ Redworm (Michael Fraser) have been playing together for less than a year. But their urban down-tempo funk, which incorporates synth and jazz violin, pushes the idea of infusing various eras and multi-instrumental stylings to new heights."It's a quirky musical concoction of the last three decades," said Clements. "We feel like we're touching on the vintage guitars of the 70s, the turntables of the 80s and 90s and some 21st century stuff for sure."All you Facebookers need only search the band to get a taste for tracks and videos ("On with Dreams" is highly recommended). Fur Bearing Animals tap into music from the past, but their method of getting their voice heard is notably current."Our goal is to be the next biggest band on Facebook," said Clements. "We live in the day and age where we can record a song, record a video and post it on the internet. It's such a valuable platform for musicians these days."As useful a tool the internet is for spreading the word, nothing quite compares to making a live connection with the audience."I hope that people can come and be inspired and see something original and kind of catch the vibe that we're putting out there," said Clements. "We're really interested in working that Sea to Sky corridor - it's such a beautiful place. It's a nice contrast to the destitution of the city streets that we live in."The blending of the band's sound is as varied as their pasts. Clements, a former professional baseball player, turned to his guitar during his downtime. In spring of 2007, he formed the garage-funk-soul band Red Yellow Blue and began collaborating with Fraser. At a young age, Fraser performed extensively with his dad in the jazz duo Swingamajig, playing in a number of high class music festivals in Canada, U.S. and Europe. In 2001, he received a British Columbia Entertainment Hall of Fame Foundation Scholarship in recognition for his dedication and musical potential. "He's an amazing guy. Really, he's a genius and he's only 19-years-old. Wait until you see him play violin. He's probably one of the best in the city," said Clements. The Fur Bearing Animals show starts at 8 p.m. at the Howe Sound Brew Pub. Tickets are $5.
